KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Jamaican authorities have seized a haul of marijuana in a rural district.
A Sunday police statement says about 360 pounds (163 kilograms) of compressed marijuana and 271 pounds (123 kilograms) of loose pot was found stuffed in barrels hidden in bushes.
Police also seized boxes, a hydraulic jack and other items during the raid in St. Elizabeth parish. There have been no arrests.
Jamaica is the Caribbean’s largest producer and exporter of marijuana, known locally as ganja. The drug has been pervasive but illegal on the island for a century.
Pot plants are grown mostly on remote mountain hillsides and in swampy areas.
