The Equalizer, Denzel Washington’s reunion with his Training Day director Antoine Fuqua, is generating such hot buzz that there are already rumors about a sequel.

The movie, which is based on a popular late-’80s TV show of the same name, is not hitting theaters until this fall but is already a hit with test audiences.

The Wrap reports: “The Equalizer has been testing through the roof, prompting Sony to move quickly on a sequel so the project has momentum by the time the first film hits theaters on Sept. 26. A mid-December test screening reportedly earned the highest scores for an R-rated movie in the studio’s history.”

The action film, which has echoes of Denzel’s hit Man on Fire, centers around a retired black ops commando who takes on Russian mobsters to rescue a kidnapped girl, played by Chloë Grace Moretz.

Fuqua, hot off Olympus Has Fallen, and Washington would likely return for a follow-up which would mark the first sequel of the Oscar winner’s career.
