NYPD has paid close to half a billion dollars in settlements since 2009

NYPD has paid out $428 million in settlements in the last five years.

The staggering numbers were obtained by MuckRock, who has published the complete list.

The top 10 payouts alone total $35 million.  The largest went to Google engineer Sasha Blair-Goldensohn, who received $11.5 million from the city in 2009 after he was partially paralyzed by a falling tree branch in Central Park.

There are more than 12,000 settlements listed since 2009, with an average settlement of $33,000, reports Gothamist.

The city has set aside $674 million for settlements and costs in 2015.
