District Attorney Daniel Donovan may not have won an indictment for Eric Garner’s case, but he would like to win something else — a seat in Congress.

Staten Island Rep. Michael Grimm announced his resignation Monday after he pleaded guilty to tax evasion.

Donovan hasn’t made an announcement yet, but he says he is “flattered” by the “enthusiastic expressions of support” he has received. “I will make an announcement after the due deliberation such an important decision deserves,” he says.

Complicating the matter is the early support of police unions. “Dan Donovan is a terrific public servant who dedicated himself to the borough of Richmond. We would encourage him to run to lend his voice on a national level,” says Roy Richter, the president of the Captain’s Endowment Association.

The decision to run may only make things worse in a city already plagued by issues surrounding the NYPD. “Just what city needs in this time of troubles and division,” Baruch College political scientist Doug Muzzio said. “The prosecutor who couldn’t/wouldn’t get an indictment of something more than a ham sandwich.”
