According to court documents, a Maryland man has admitted to seriously injuring a nine-year-old boy after he caught him eating a slice of birthday cake without permission.

Thursday, Robert Leroy Wilson was arrested after his girlfriend’s son was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Police say Wilson handcuffed the child and beat him repeatedly as punishment for taking the cake.

Neighbors in the apartment complex where the beating allegedly took place were shocked to find out what happened.

“I mean the most innocent, purest, sweetest thing on earth and somebody can do that. It makes no sense,” Abe Bricker, a neighbor told WUSA9.

“I don’t know what this world’s coming to. That someone can do that to a child.”

The boy’s mother was at work when the violent assault took place. His uncle was home and called 911. When EMS arrived, the mother had beat the ambulance to the house and said they were no longer needed.

The Community Rescue Service told WUSA9 its ambulance crew had no reason to believe the child was in danger and even checked with the mother several times to see if she needed help. However, without a police agency, the crew could not legally enter the home. The ambulance was called again four hours later.

On Sunday afternoon, the boy ultimately died from his injuries.

Wilson is being held at the Washington County Detention Center on a $1 million bond. He was initially charged with first and second-degree assault, child abuse and reckless endangerment. Police will now pursue murder charges due Jack Garcia passing away.
