Two poets call out all the black men who hate black women

“These black girls need to watch out, ’cause white girls is winning.”

In April, college students Crystal Valentine and Aaliyah Jihad teamed up to recite their brutally — and beautifully — honest poem, To Be Black and Woman and Alive at the 2015 College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational.

On Sunday, Button Poetry posted a video of their performance to Youtube and it became an instant hit.

“Puerto Rican, Italian, Bajan, Thai — I know they want me to be everything I’m not,” the poets declare, casting light on a thinly veiled grievance about the romantic preferences of the men in their communities.

“I grew up learning how to protect men who hate me,” they later admit.

The audience breaks out in applause as the young women unpack the ironies that they are faced with daily — often being asked to fight for the rights of their men while simultaneously being made to feel undesirable by those who seek their support.

Whether you agree with the sentiment or not, there is no denying the conviction in this performance.
