Dellarontay Readus’s mother died after battling heart and stomach issues, just weeks before her son was scheduled to start his freshman year at college. The family initially had trouble raising the funds to even pay for her funeral. However, thanks to generous donations made through a GoFundMe fundraiser, they were able to not only cover the funeral arrangements but also make a significant dent in Readus’s college expenses.

Even though they only asked for $2,000, they ultimately ended up raising $28,0000.

“Basically it all comes down to the fact that we’re poor, and we don’t have anything,” Readus told WREG. “We didn’t have anything our whole lives, and we still don’t have anything right now.”

“I hope she’s looking down on me, and she’s able to see everything I’m doing,” Readus cried. “I hope she’s able to see all the good work I’m going to put in this world.”
