A Tennessee city councilman is in hot water after audio of him calling someone a racial epithet was made public.

WVLT is reporting that in the recording, Loudon City Councilman Johnny James can be heard threatening to beat a black man to death. James, who also runs a car towing service, claims to have made the call after a customer refused to pay for service.

“If you don’t get 941 down here on Jim Dyke Road and Bright Road you’re gonna have one deceased black ni**er down here.” he says to the dispatcher.

When asked if he had weapons on him, James responds, “I don’t need a weapon to beat him to death with.”

At one point, the local politician reportedly confronted the man at his truck, and the two of them began fighting.

James has since come forward to explain his actions. While admitting he didn’t conduct himself the “proper way,” he also points out, “I wasn’t acting as a city official. I was acting as a guy that owns a body shop… He pushed me further than I wanted to be pushed.”
