Russell Simmons’ RushCard is a prepaid payroll system that allows financially vulnerable people to get their paycheck two days early. However, now it seems like the financial safety net has put thousands of users in a precarious position.

Last week, several RushCard users were unceremoniously frozen out of their accounts, leaving them without access to their funds while the company scrambled to get their system back up.

“I want to personally reassure you that your funds are safe and that we are addressing every issue as quickly as possible,” Simmons said in a video on his Facebook page. “I deeply apologize for the hardship this is causing and give you my solemn commitment that we will fix these problems.”

RushCard falls under the umbrella of Rush Communications, a media, finance and fashion company and one of the many businesses owned by the hip hop mogul. While the company claims the glitch was due to a botched “technology transition,” that was of no consolation to those affected.

“There are thousands of us that have been locked out of our accounts, can’t access accounts, money is missing, direct deposits not posted,” complained one RushCard user. “They keep lying on their Facebook page that the system is back up, and it’s not.”

“I was loving RushCard but now I’m very upset,” someone else reviewed to ConsumerAffairs. “I got paid but I can’t use my card. I don’t have any cash cause it’s all on my card. My child doesn’t eat air.”
