Usher confronts racial injustice in new 'Chains' video

Friday, Usher released his new song, "Chains" through the streaming service, TIDAL.

Friday, Usher released his new song, Chains, through the streaming service TIDAL.

The track is meant to put the spotlight on racial injustice in America and recognize those who have lost their lives due to police brutality.

“The reality is that racial bigotry diminishes the lives of too many people in our country,” Usher said about the video in a statement to Rap-Up. “We have to come together as a country to solve these problems, and this is one way I can contribute.”

What makes the video even more provocative is that when TIDAL users start watching it, the clip activates their computer’s web camera to scan and identify the viewer’s facial features. If someone looks away from the computer, the video immediately stops playing.

Usher fans will quite literally be made to face closeup images of 8 people of color and the details of how they died. The individuals featured include: Trayvon Martin, Rekia Boyd, Caesar Cruz,Ramarley Graham, Kendrick Johnson, Marlon Brown, Andrew Joseph and Sean Bell.
