NEW ORLEANS (AP) β€” A New Orleans magistrate commissioner has ordered a man accused of shooting a medical student held until a bond hearing next week.

Prosecutors said Tuesday that they want 21-year-old Euric Cain held without bond in the shooting of 25-year-old Peter Gold.

Online records show that Cain was booked Monday with attempted armed robbery, armed robbery, aggravated kidnapping and attempted first-degree murder. His hearing is scheduled for Dec. 3.

Tulane University released a statement from Gold’s family saying the medical student has improved from guarded to stable condition.

Surveillance video released by police shows Gold pulling up to help a woman who was being dragged by a gunman toward an SUV early Friday.

Police say Gold was shot after saying he didn’t have any money.

The woman was treated for minor injuries.

β€œHis courage is an admirable example of the fact that the citizens of New Orleans are not going to turn a blind eye to crime and that we are going to fight back,” New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said in a press conference on Monday, referring to Gold.
