NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A New Orleans magistrate commissioner has ordered a man accused of shooting a medical student held until a bond hearing next week.

Prosecutors said Tuesday that they want 21-year-old Euric Cain held without bond in the shooting of 25-year-old Peter Gold.

Online records show that Cain was booked Monday with attempted armed robbery, armed robbery, aggravated kidnapping and attempted first-degree murder. His hearing is scheduled for Dec. 3.

Tulane University released a statement from Gold’s family saying the medical student has improved from guarded to stable condition.

Surveillance video released by police shows Gold pulling up to help a woman who was being dragged by a gunman toward an SUV early Friday.

Police say Gold was shot after saying he didn’t have any money.

The woman was treated for minor injuries.

“His courage is an admirable example of the fact that the citizens of New Orleans are not going to turn a blind eye to crime and that we are going to fight back,” New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said in a press conference on Monday, referring to Gold.
