An off-duty NYPD lieutenant was the cause of carnage on the a Queens expressway when he plowed into three idling cars on the side of the road, knocking one woman 30 feet off the bridge.
The cars belonged to a motorist who was stuck on the side of the road with a disabled car and a 22-year-old woman and an off-duty FDNY EMT who both stopped to help the motorist. While the three were out helping the first motorist, an off-duty NYPD lieutenant plowed into the back of one of the three cars.
When the lieutenant hit the cars, he caused a chain reaction crash that knocked the woman off the bridge. She fell 30 feet and was taken to the hospital under cardiac arrest. There is the possibility that she has been paralyzed by her injuries. The EMT was not knocked off the bridge but did suffer a broken arm. The first driver was not injured in the crash but was taken into custody on suspicion of drunk driving.
The off-duty NYPD lieutenant submitted to a breathalyzer test as well as blood tests, which determined that he had not been driving drunk at the time of the crash. The officer and the EMT were both taken to New York-Presbyterian/Queens.
