HAYWARD, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say the police chief of a Northern California university repeatedly stabbed his stepson in the chest with a power drill and fired a shot inside his home after an argument turned into a fight.

Alameda County sheriff’s officials said Tuesday that the 20-year-old stepson went to a hospital with multiple stab wounds and an apparent punctured lung, but his injuries weren’t life-threatening.

Sheriff’s Sgt. J.D. Nelson tells the San Francisco Chronicle that Sonoma State University Police Chief Nathan Johnson reported the fight and received a cut on his head.

He says no arrests have been made and investigators are trying to determine what led to Monday’s fight.

Johnson, who couldn’t be reached for comment, told investigators he fired his personal gun into a wall as a warning.

The school with more than 9,000 students is an hour north of San Francisco.
