Renee Davis, who was five months pregnant, was shot and killed by King County sheriff’s deputies on Friday in Auburn, Washington.

Davis’ foster sister, Danielle Bargala, said Davis, 23, struggled with depression and had texted someone earlier that night to say she wasn’t doing well. That person contacted the authorities, leading deputies to Davis’ home, located on Muckleshoot tribal land.

“It’s really upsetting because it was a wellness check,” Bargala told the News Tribune. “Obviously she didn’t come out of it well.”

The sheriff’s office said they responded to a report of a suicidal person and found Davis armed with a handgun. Deputies ended up firing multiple rounds, fatally hitting Davis. Two of her children, 2 and 3, were in the home at the time of the shooting. Her 5-year-old child was staying with friends.

Davis’ family is now trying to figure out where her three children will go.

The two deputies involved have been placed on paid administrative leave while detectives investigate the shooting.
