A West Virginia high school teacher was suspended after going on several racist rants on social media, including one rant in which she speculated that the Chicago suspects accused of torturing a mentally disabled teen could be “Obama’s children.”
“Can you imagine how many riots we would have around the country if the terrorists were white?” the post read on Twitter.“This could have been Obama’s children.”
Mary Durstein, who teaches social studies at Huntington High School, was put on paid leave on Monday. according to the Herald-Dispatch.
The decision to put Durstein on leave was made after several students flagged comments made by Durstein online over the weekend. They pointed to Twitter rants that went as far back as 2015 as evidence of Durstein’s bigotry.
Besides the rant about the Chicago torture suspects, the rants include support for Muslims being deported, rants against the Black Lives Matter movement and attacks against President Barack Obama.
“The tweets that you have seen — those are things that we do not adhere to,” Cabell County Superintendent Bill Smith told the newspaper. “We believe that all children are welcome here — all adults as well — in Cabell County schools.”
Durstein has since reportedly deleted her Twitter account, and she is expected to meet with school officials. An investigation is also underway to see if she violated any county policies.
