Bush’s ethics lawyer: Jeff Sessions may go to jail if he lied to Congress

Richard Painter said that if Attorney General Jeff Sessions lied to Congress about his ties to Russia, it was “a good way to go to jail.”

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

Richard Painter, the law professor who was ethics lawyer under President George W. Bush, said that if reports were true that Attorney General Jeff Sessions lied to Congress about his ties to Russia, it was “a good way to go to jail.”

“Misleading the Senate in sworn testimony about one own contacts with the Russians is a good way to go to jail,” Painter, who served in the Bush White House from 2005 and 2007 and is now law professor for the University of Minnesota, said on Twitter, then added, “I spent two hours with the Congressional Black Caucus today discussing Russian attacks on the US. Does AG Sessions have anything to say?”

On Wednesday, Sessions claimed that he had not had any contact with Russia concerning the 2016 election even as The New York Times reported that White House officials from the Obama administration had been subtly tipping off intelligence agencies to Trump’s Russian ties.

Sessions is not the first Trump administration official to be accused of ties to Russia. Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn is perhaps one of the most high profile after he was forced to resign when he was accused of speaking with Russian officials about sanctions before the Trump administration had even moved into the White House.
