According to U.S., European and Arab officials, the United Arab Emirates set up a meeting on Jan. 11 between Blackwater founder Erik Prince and a Russian close to Vladimir Putin in order to establish back channels for communications between Donald Trump and Putin.

According to Washington Post, the UAE reportedly arranged the meeting, which took place in the Seychelles islands in the Indian Ocean, in an attempt to get the United States to work with Russia on such issues as its relationship with Iran, which the UAE would like to see weakened.

Prince, whose sister, Betsy DeVos, is now the education secretary, presented himself as a representative for Trump during the two-day encounter, though Trump officials have denied that he had any authority to do so.

“We are not aware of any meetings, and Erik Prince had no role in the transition,” said White House press secretary Sean Spicer.

“Erik had no role on the transition team. This is a complete fabrication. The meeting had nothing to do with President Trump. Why is the so-called under-resourced intelligence community messing around with surveillance of American citizens when they should be hunting terrorists?” said a Prince spokesperson.

The report of Prince’s alleged meeting comes as the Trump administration is embroiled in accusations of ties to Russia as such ties are now being investigated, along with the role Russia played in the 2016 election.
