Move over Soul Cycle – this black woman is putting a little more ‘spike’ in your ride

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

Health and wellness has become a movement for self-care and self-improvement and increasingly a ‘cool’ trend in pop culture.

But there is still something the industry could use more of: Melanin.

Thankfully, that’s where Hampton University grad Briana Owens comes in. Owens is the creator of Spiked Spin, is a weekly fitness movement dedicated to creating “an atmosphere that is non-judgmental, accepting, and most importantly encouraging of your individual journey.”

She was inspired to create the popular New York City fitness class after wanting to fill the void of diversity within the fitness industry – and spin in particular.

Inspiring the industry to kick stereotypes to the curb about African Americans and fitness, Briana’s “Spiked Spin” is much more than a class, but a growing movement – a movement that help more people of color take their health and fitness to the next level.

Get to know more about the #SpikedLife from founder Briana Owens:

What year were you founded?

May, 2016.

What inspired you to launch your business?

Spiked Spin was birthed out of the lack of diversity in the boutique fitness industry, and the need for quality affordable fitness options for minorities. There are many crazes that cater to other demographics, and often times minorities are an afterthought. As I began to educate myself about the disproportionate rates that Blacks suffer from obesity and the diseases correlated with it, I realized Spiked Spin is needed.

I’ve created a lifestyle fitness brand that caters to the preferences and cultural ethos of minorities and also encourages the #SpikedSquad to embrace their journey, accept their present state, and strive to be their best self both on and off the bike.

What makes your brand unique?

SS is unique because of the authentic connection we make with our consumer. Since our initial ride in May, 2016, we have elevated beyond the label of “fitness brand.” We are a system of support that our riders depend on for empowerment ! Our reach extends far beyond the spin studio. Spiked is a lifestyle!

Why should everyone #BuyBlack this holiday season?

Everyone should buy black this holiday season and every season, because that is the only way minorities will begin to shift the power structure of influence and ownership in this country. But beyond that, it’s awesome to know that people who look like you are creating amazing products with you and your needs in mind!

How do you pay it forward within your community?

My entire business model was created for the community. I have created a space that offers affordable fun fitness. With each person willing to take Spiked Spin, or make any healthy changes to their lifestyle, we’ll begin to improve the health gaps that have existed for generations. We also partner with many non-profit organizations to help provide funding for educating for the next generation.

What is your business mantra?

We are the change that we need. Spike Your Life!
