Obama hasn’t spoken to Trump since he became the president

There is definitely no love lost between Donald Trump and Barack Obama.

Usually, a current president and their predecessor will at least have some kind of dialogue or communication between them, even if they don’t necessarily agree. But for the first time in decades, that’s not the case here, according to a report by CNN.

It’s unsurprising that there would be animosity between Trump and Obama, especially because Trump rose to prominence on the birther movement. That movement questioned the legitimacy of Obama’s presidency by falsely claiming that he was born in Kenya.

But the two of them were cordial to one another during Trump’s inauguration. Obama welcomed Trump to the White House and even left him a letter, as is tradition as the office of the presidency passes from one person to the next.

“Congratulations on a remarkable run,” Obama wrote. “Millions have placed their hopes in you, and all of us, regardless of party, should hope for expanded prosperity and security during your tenure.”

According to CNN, Trump was “touched” by the note and wanted to call Obama up to thank him. However, Obama was already traveling and couldn’t be reached. When an Obama aide reached out, the White House simply asked that Trump’s thanks be relayed.

That was the last communication the two of them had.

Since that time, Trump had continued to chip away at Obama’s legacy, reversing his policies and attacking his cornerstone legislation, Obamacare, in particular. He also personally attacked Obama and once infamously claimed that Obama had tapped his phones.

As for Obama, he’s careful not to stoop to Trump’s level. He hasn’t personally come after the president except to come out against his policies, and all of his swipes at Trump have been much more subtle.

But with the divide between these two men as wide as it is, it’s likely that the silence will continue. And considering the fact that most presidents will ask their predecessors for advice or words of wisdom, this is just one more tradition of the presidency Trump has broken with.
