At Least 17 People Dead in Florida High School Shooting

A shooting at a Parkland, FL high school left 17 people dead yesterday. According to the website Everytown For Gun Safety, which catalogs school shootings around the country, this marks the 18th school shooting this year. Not all of those incidents resulted in injury or death. The suspect, however, in this deadly attack was successful in his attempt to harm as many people as possible. Nikolas Cruz, a former student from the high school, was arrested after the shooting. He has a court appearance today.

New York Times Writer Fired Hours After Being Hired for Using the N-Word

Quinn Norton, a white woman, was fired from the New York Times just hours after the publication announced her new role as a “lead opinion writer on the power, culture and consequences of technology.” The New York Times became aware of the fact that Norton had previously used racial slurs and was known to be affiliated with white supremacists. Norton responded to her dismissal saying that white people should engage with the racists in their lives.

Vice President Mike Pence chose the 200th birthday of Frederick Douglass to wrongly assert that Black unemployment is at an all-time low in the United States. The Black unemployment rate was at an all-time low in December 2017, but has actually spiked several percentage points ever since.

Colin Kaepernick’s List of Depositions Grows in Case Against NFL

Former NFL player Colin Kaepernick expanded his list of depositions for his ongoing grievance case against the NFL. The former San Francisco 49er claims the league blacklisted him after he sparked a protest movement by kneeling during the national anthem before the start of football games. His deposition list includes numerous NFL coaches, owners, and executives. Jane Goodell, wife of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, has also been added to the list after Kaepernick’s lawyers went through several of the Commissioner’s text messages, emails and phone records.

In a recent interview, actress Viola Davis urged Hollywood to pay her what she’s worth. the Academy Award and Golden Globe-winning thespian noted that she has been called the “Black Meryl Streep,” but she has not been offered the same opportunities and pay on par with Streep and other decorated white actresses who have an acting pedigree similar to her own.
