The Academy Awards promises to be an unforgettable night for Mary J. Blige.

Mary J. Blige will be performing “Mighty River,” the Oscar-nominated song she co-wrote with Raphael Saadiq and Taura Stinson for the movie Mudbound. MJB is also nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her haunting performance in the Dee Rees-directed drama.

Blige, who described herself as “addicted to lashes” had to leave her glamorous wigs and makeup behind to strip down for her portrayal of a sharecropper’s wife in Jim Crow Mississippi. And the performance changed her perspective.

–One hater learned the hard way that Michael B. Jordan’s Twitter clapback game is strong–

“I’m Mary J. Blige. I mean, like, this is what I do. I wear wigs, I wear bob wigs, and I had to completely strip down to my own natural hair texture, which I’ve always been afraid of,” she told New York Magazine. “Dee [Rees] stripped me down all the way to what I truly am, and people were complimenting me. People were saying how beautiful I was. I didn’t know I was that beautiful for real. You understand what I’m saying? I didn’t know that.”

Whatever the outcome at the Oscars, Mary J. Blige has already made history: she is the first person to both be nominated for a performance and original song in the same year. Shall we say: Kendu who?

Other artists to look forward to on the Oscar’s stage that night include Common and Andra Day who will perform “Stand Up For Something” from Marshall. Miguel will also sing “Remember Me” from the animated feature Coco.

The 90th Annual Academy Awards airs March 4, 2018 on ABC.
