How Jay-Z toppled Diddy to claim top spot on Forbes list with a $900 million year

We all remember when Beyonce and Jay-Z became that billion dollar couple (because, well, there was that billion dollar incident on the elevator), but 2018 is now taking one of hip-hop’s favorite moguls to new heights.

For the first time in Forbes hip-hop crowning history (since 2011), Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter has out-done both Diddy and Dr. Dre for the top spot.

Bring in $900 million over the past year, in comparison to his previous year’s earnings of $800 million, the 4:44 rapper is sits at the top of the hip hop throne. The jump in earnings is reportedly credited to his supersize Roc Nation empire, the Tidal streaming service, and the Armand de Brignac champagne and D’Ussé cognac.

Beyonce and Jay-Z together remain to be an incredible force, as Beyonce has also topped Forbes’ list for the highest-paid women in music in years past. It will be interesting to see where Queen Bey reigns in 2018.

Taking second place on the Forbes list this year, Diddy slipped behind Hov with $825 million in earnings. Still, the Bad Boy legend saw an increase of $5 million, believed to be a result of his vodka ventures and cable network Revolt.

Dr. Dre remained in third place on the Forbes list.

Both Drake and Eminem found themselves tied for the number four spot with $100 million.

The constant ups and downs are rather normal for these lists, and Forbes continues to be an interesting insight into modern-day politics and entertainment. Late last year, they reported that Trump’s net worth had decreased by a whopping $600 million on the list of richest Americans.

May the greats continue to rise and the losers continue to fall…
