Philando Castile charity clears student lunch debt in Minnesota school district

After Philando Castile was shot and killed by police, Pam Fergus started an online fundraiser in his memory called Philando Feeds the Children.

Castile was a nutrition supervisor at a school before he was killed during a 2016 traffic stop and so Fergus decided that her charity work would be aimed at reducing student lunch debt in the school district Castile used to work in.

The goal was to raise $5,000 but in the first seven months the charity called Philando Feeds the Children, raised $111,000 in donations.

Last week, Fergus announced that the donations that had cleared at that point were enough to eliminate all student lunch debt in Minnesota’s St. Paul Public Schools.

“St. Paul Public Schools System has 56 schools. K-12. And this fund, PHILANDO FEEDS THE CHILDREN, just paid off the lunch debt for all of them,” read the charity’s webpage. “That means that no parent of the 37,000 kids who eat meals at school need to worry about how to pay that overdue debt. Philando is STILL reaching into his pocket, and helping a kid out. One by one. With your help. Your donations will fill that pocket for years to come. Thank you for your generosity […] You’ve made an enormous difference in their lives.”

Fergus would like to see the charity continue on. She may have exceeded her goal by many thousands but she feels that there are so many other kids that the fund could benefit and she wants to see the charity continue to grow.

“I don’t know how much it would take to help the whole state of Minnesota,” Fergus stated. “There is no end goal. Basically, I want a million bucks in there.”
