“It’s not murder if they’re black”: Sex offender posts deadly threats against Howard University students

John Edgar Rush, a 26-year-old convicted sex offender, admitted to making online racial threats against Howard University students.

According to The Washington Post, John Edgar Rush admitted to making the threats back in 2015 and justice is finally being served.

Rush left the racially charged messages on 4Chan and Reddit, using the n-word and writing, “any blacks left at Howard University after 10 tomorrow will be the first to go…After all, it’s not murder if they’re black.”

In addition, John Edgar Rush wrote, “I’ll go out a hero knowing I made the world better.”

Two days after the messages were posted, the city and campus-wide police patrol took extra cautionary measures to ensure the students’ safety against Rush, who admitted to sending the messages, while in Northern Virginia.

Some classes at Howard University were canceled and parents made it clear how upset they were about the campus not being on lockdown. The students also held rallies to speak out against Rush’s racially charged messages.

According to NBC Washington, after Rush admitted to the murder threats, he was arrested in October 2017.

Rush was apparently banned from the internet during the time the threats were made, according to Essence. Now nearly three years later, Rush is finally being prosecuted for his racial acts. While in court last Tuesday, public defender Maria Jacob said that Rush has a mental health disorder but that it does not affect his competence.

Rush reportedly became a registered sex offender in 2012 after being involved in an incident with a child in Loudoun County.

Prosecutors reportedly traced his messages on the sites through his IP address which was connected to a Panera wifi in Northern Virginia and the credit card he used to pay for his food.

Rush is facing a minimum of a 5-years and is scheduled for sentencing on July 20.
