Why Reddit ran a racist dating ad calling “white Europeans to join the revolution”

Reddit is under fire for running an ad on its site for a white supremacist dating website.
The site, WhiteDate.Net, calls for “white Europeans” to join their “trad revolution,” short for “traditional revolution,” AdAge noted.
And as you might guess, “traditional” means “white-only” in this context.

And the site itself is just as troubling, with references to “white genocide” and the “main solutions” to this so-called problem.
“Be part of the Trad Revolution that has been evolving in white communities where masculine men court the feminine women with the explicit objective to continue their lineage,” the ad says.
The ad also specifically warns white women: “Dear women of the West: Without white children we will perish.”

The ad is gross in so many ways, from its racism to its sexism and everything in between, and the internet rightly called Reddit out for allowing it to run.
But after all the backlash, Reddit only offered this semi-apology: It was an accident.
“We do our best to enforce our ads policies across both direct and programmatic ads; but in this case, a promoted post that was in violation of our ads policy was mistakenly approved,” a Reddit spokeswoman said by e-mail. “In light of this incident, we are reviewing our screening processes to ensure similar mistakes don’t occur in the future.”
The company that ran the ad hasn’t been banned from Reddit outright but has had its advertising privileges taken away.
“When we identify or are notified of an ad that’s against our policy, we remove the ad, contact the advertiser and inform them of their specific infraction,” the spokeswoman said. “In some cases, we ban them from continued advertising, which we’ve done in this instance.”
