Why the Obamas can’t attend Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced that they will not be inviting politicians and dignitaries to their wedding unless they have an “existing direct relationship with” the couple.

“It has been decided that an official list of political leaders – both U.K. and international – is not required for Prince Harry and Ms. Markle’s wedding. Her Majesty’s Government was consulted on this decision, which was taken by The Royal Household,” a Kensington Palace spokesman said Tuesday.

Basically, since Harry is fifth in line for the throne and will be sixth soon once Prince William and Kate Middleton have their third child, the big gathering of leaders and dignitaries has been deemed “not required.”

Instead of inviting world leaders, then, the couple will extend invitations to 1,200 members of the public, described as “young people who have shown strong leadership, and those who have served their communities.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will also be inviting another 200 guests from charities that they are tied to and another 100 children from local schools, according to People.

Sadly, this means that Barack and Michelle Obama won’t be at the royal wedding, despite speculation that Prince Harry would invite them.

That speculation also brought up questions of whether United States President Donald Trump would be invited, as it could be seen as a major snub if Obama was invited and not Trump.

After all, Trump has made it clear exactly what he thinks of Obama and his legacy.

But rather than letting the wedding get bogged down by politics, it looks like Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have decided to keep their wedding neutral as much as possible.

That doesn’t mean, however, that they won’t be hanging out with the Obamas.

“Both the couples look forward to seeing each other soon,” a royal source said.
