Inside Jared Kushner and Donald Trump’s prison reform scam

Prison reform efforts by Jared Kushner (yes, apparently that’s a real thing) were stalled, and a bill he believed would get pushed through the House was met with opposition instead on Wednesday.

The bill by backed Donald Trump’s son-in-law was instead set aside by the House Judiciary committee, ending Kushner’s bi-partisan hopes to make a deal on the hot-button issue, reports NYMag.

But Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) could not come to terms, according to reports.

They want the bill overhauled and reportedly told House Judiciary panel members to oppose a narrower prison reform bill “without the addition of a sentencing overhaul they spent months negotiating,” House sources said.

“Frankly, I respect the two senators, but they have enough problems in the Senate,” said Rep.Doug Collins (R-Ga.) said. “I wish they would actually focus on passing bills over there. That would be nice.”

Trump wants the bill to be “prison only” and for it not to address a broad criminal justice bill.

The bill is designed to discourage prisoners from repeating their crimes by offering training programs to help them develop marketable skills. There’s no sentence changes, and that’s where many take issue with the bill. The ACLU and the NAACP say a training program is not enough and want the bill to go further and reduce sentences for some prisoners.

“In my view, considering prison reform without consideration of sentencing reform has the process backward, and avoids the difficult but necessary legislating on that critical issue,” said House Judiciary panel’s top Democrat, Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York.

Many are skeptical that Jared Kusher’s efforts at the behest of his father-in-law Donald Trump are designed to address the best interest of prisoners. After all, Trump stated earlier this year that he believes that executing drug dealers will somehow solve the opiate crisis.
