The award is reserved for folks who create entertainment content that features their fresh, fearless perspectives, and we can’t think of anyone more deserving than The Chi creator.

Lena Waithe gets candid about being a Black artist on Questlove Supreme podcast

Waithe is known for being super candid about her art and she shared some words of wisdom with Questlove during a recent interview on his podcast.

“I always look at it like food and what you digest. So they’re being given McDonald’s, which is fast, it tastes good, and it goes through you really quickly,” she said. “So then it’s like when they try to give you filet mignon, foie gras, caviar, escargot, a la Moonlight, Get Out things like that, sometimes it becomes difficult for them to eat that food–because they’re so used to McDonald’s.”

In case you’re unaware of Waithe’s many accomplishments, she’s responsible for bringing The Chi to Showtime and also produced Netflix’s Step Sisters. She nabbed an Emmy for comedy writing for Master of None, making her the first black woman to take home that trophy and stars in the second season of Dear White People. As if that’s not enough to celebrate, Lena Waithe is also featured in Steven Spielberg‘s recent flick, Ready Player One and is currently writing and producing the upcoming series, Twenties, for TBS.
