Nigerian rapper brilliantly recreates Childish Gambino’s ‘This is America’ video for ‘This is Nigeria’
Nigerian rapper Folarin Falana, known as Falz recreated Childish Gambino’s viral “This is America” music video to shed light on the social flaws of his beloved homeland Nigeria.
In case you’ve been living under rock these past couple weeks, Childish Gambino’s “This is America” is a four-minute-long critique that addresses the oppression Black Americans still face in 2018, with the lyrics, “This is America/Don’t catch you slippin’ now/Look how I’m livin’ now/Police be trippin’ now.” Closely examining race and gun violence in the U.S., the song’s visuals follow Childish Gambino throughout a warehouse, with specific references to tragic incidents such as the 2015 Charleston shooting that claimed the lives of nine Black people.

“This is Nigeria,” on the other hand, “tackles everything from the government’s sluggish response to the missing Chibok Girls, the drug epidemic affecting Nigerian youth, widespread consumerism, the country’s infamous Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), internet fraud, crooked pastors, Fulani herdsmen and even Big Brother Nigeria,” as reported by OkayAfrica.
Falz raps, “This is Nigeria/Praise and worship we singing now/Pastor put hand on the breast of his member, he’s pulling the demon out/This is Nigeria/No electricity daily o/ Your people are still working multiple jobs and they talk say we lazy o.”

The music video for “This is Nigeria” was directed by Prodigeezy, and the track itself was produced by Wande Thomas.
