The Download | July 9th: People in Chicago rally against gun violence + White male faces no charges for killing a Black man + Michelle Williams lands a reality show on OWN Network

Your daily 60-second news wrap.

Don’t ever let people tell you that people who live in the inner city, don’t organize or advocate for change. Over the weekend, protestors in Chicago shut down the Dan Ryan Expressway to rally against gun violence in their city.

Father Michael Pfleger led the march and was joined by civil rights leader Rev Jesse Jackson. So far Chicago has had 252 homicides and 1,100 shootings in the first six months of this year- which is actually 105 fewer deaths than in 2017. According to the Chicago Tribune, the majority of the victims of homicide in Chicago are young Black men.

And in a sad case to watch down in Louisiana, 18-year-old Matthew Martin who bragged on snapchat about killing a black man, will not face any charges. Martin took to snapchat to brag about striking Rell Lewis— who he referred to as “some n-word –with his car.

According to Louisiana State Police,  after a thorough investigation, it didn’t show that Martin broke any traffic laws during the incident. But it’s a scary reminder of racist attitudes that just won’t seem to go away.

And a former member of Destiny’s Child is taking her talents to reality tv. Michelle Williams and her fiance’, Chad Johnson, landed a deal with OWN Network!

We’re still waiting on more details but if it’s with queen Oprah,we know it’s going to be good!
