Season 7 of Lifetime’s Married at First Sight premiered last week and one contestant is already pissing off the Black community.
The premise of the show is that a group of experts in relationships, spirituality and psychology find a large test group of marriage-minded singles and then choose three men and three women to get married.
The reality show is a modern day twist on the age old tradition of arranged marriages and has has some hit or miss successes. A couple from the first season is reportedly still happily married with a child, while other seasons have resulted in tear-filled divorces.
One thing is always true, every season their loyal viewing audience is gifted ONE couple of color, and this time around fans were immediately upset by some of the comments made by the only Black male selected.
Last Tuesday millions watched Mia Bally marry Tristan Thompson. But before fans could forgive Thompson for sharing the same name as the scandal-prone NBA star, the 29-year-old groom put his foot in his mouth and raised brows for his own set of reasons.
Thompson, who played in the NBA’s G League and owns tutoring clubs to help prepare young people for college, smiled on camera and said wihout a shred of hesitation that he would only marry a woman of a lighter complexion, specifically someone lighter than his butterscotch coloring, because darker women just don’t do it for him.
“I really don’t prefer women that are darker than me,” he said. “When it comes to marriage you’ve gotta be with someone that melts your butter.”
He also repeated made fat-shaming jokes saying his woman better not be “a biscuit off 350” pounds.
One of the show’s experts is a Black man from the clergy and he spoke up saying it may not be a good idea to pick someone so shallow to get a coveted spot on their show. But the other two experts, who happen to be two white women, saw nothing wrong with Thompson’s aversion to most of his own race, and pushed to have him selected for the show.
Ultimately, Mia, a woman of Indian-Trinidadian and Jamaican heritage with fair skin who was of average weight with silky straight hair was selected to be Thompson’s bride.
Aww! He's already the best husband! 😍 #MarriedAtFirstSight pic.twitter.com/OgYAU6Nmja

While Mia may have seemed to get a good first impression of her husband who she met at the alter, Black Twitter wasn’t having it and immediately made it known that Thompson was on their hit list.
Many people also pointed out how ironic Thompson’s statements are given that both he and his wife have mostly dark skinned family members particularly both of their mothers.

Me and the majority of black women when Mia, Tristan’s light skinned wife, didn’t want to kiss him because she didn’t know what kind of disease he had. #mafs #MAFS #MarriedAtFirstSight pic.twitter.com/6X56AIEYWi

They have a guy in the matchmaking special every season who says something fucked up about Black women (in this case something colorist), but this time I'm mad that they actually chose this guy #MAFS #MarriedAtFirstSight

I'm glad Pastor Cal at least brought up the issues with Tristan…but why choose him? 🤔 I find it hard to believe that there wasn't a single appealing Black man who loved Black women. I wanted to root for them! #MAFS #MarriedAtFirstSight pic.twitter.com/2Dzl6hvHQ6

Mia must have low self esteem with the way she’s going on and on about Tristan being this that and third. No girl. #MAFS #MarriedAtFirstSight
