The attorney, William Wagstaff, said Dollar General needs to “take a page out of Starbucks” and require “racial sensitivity training” for all stores nationwide after a clerk refused to complete an order for his client, 40-year-old special education teacher Madonna Wilburn. The clerk, Ken Dudek refused her coupons and said she was “trying to take advantage of the system,” Yahoo reports.

Wilburn posted the lengthy interaction of the irritated worker on social media and now is planning to sue.

Said Wagstaff: “When someone says to a black person ‘you people,’ they’re being racist, referring to black people pejoratively.”

Dollar General fired Dudek and released this statement:

“Based upon our investigation, we believe that certain aspects of this matter, including the involvement of law enforcement, were not handled in accordance with our policies and expectations,” a provided statement read. “For this reason, we made the decision to sever our employment relationship with the employee involved.”

“We provide training to all employees focused on our core values and we regret we fell short of our goals in this unfortunate incident.”

The did say that they are looking to “further enhance education” for their employees.

After the video of the incident went viral, Dedek’s family started harassing Wilburn online, Wagstaff said.

Wilburn, who is a mother of four children and was voted Teacher of the Month, shared a screenshot with comments from Jennifer Dudek, which said her brother is “not racist, he’s just frustrated with the job in general.”

Another Facebook user named Josiah Dudek wrote, “We don’t dislike any race. Everyone’s equal. You’re all just mad she couldn’t use her precious coupons.”

He then called Wilburn a “b****” and used the hashtag #Trump2020.”

Wilburn said she believes she was racially profiled and said there was definitely more that happened.

“What the video didn’t capture was this man telling me to ‘shut up,’ and ‘I hate people like you.’ Did he mean women? Black women? People who coupon?’”
