The father of former NFL quarterback Michael Vick was sentenced to five years in prison for heroin distribution and money-laundering, the Daily Mail reports.

Michael Dwayne Boddie, 56, was handed the sentence on Wednesday, after pleading guilty in connection with a large-scale heroin distribution operation. This follows an indictment that charged 12 other people in addition. The ringleader of the operation William ‘Pops’ Joe, died awaiting sentencing earlier this year at 67 years old.

Boddie was reportedly an addict who has his own “serious substance abuse problem” his court-appointed attorney James Ellenson said.

The attorney asked that Boddie be sent to another facility outside of Petersburg because he is too well known and it would disrupt his rehabilitation process.

According to the indictment, from 2014 to 2017, the group conspired to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 1000 grams or more of heroin.

Boddie doesn’t have a relationship with Vick or his brother Marcus. Vick played 13 seasons in the NFL mainly for the Philadelphia Eagles and the Atlanta Falcons, but also saw trouble himself when he was convicted in 2007 for taking part in a dog fighting ring and was sentenced to 23 months in federal prison.

Vick, 38, is now offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Legends in the new Alliance of American Football league.
