As campaigns for the 2018 midterm elections head into the final stretch and early voting commences in some states, theGrio is offering snapshots of candidates who align with our midterm elections manifesto. We support candidates whose words and actions buoy the quality of life in our communities. Candidates with our stamp of approval must demonstrate that they not only understand the issues that disproportionately impact the Black community, but also have a credible plan to comprehensively address said issues.
The Brian Kavanaugh confirmation hearings were a stark reminder of how partisan politics can be the deciding factor in important national issues such as lifetime judicial appointments to the Supreme Court. Decisions from the Supreme Court impact generations of people. For this reason and many others, it is imperative that we vote only for Senators, Representatives, “down ballot” elected officials and proposals that actively work to dismantle the systemic oppression that pervades American institutions. #BlackVoterPower

theGrio’s Candidate: Beto O’Rourke, Democrat
Opponent: Ted Cruz, Republican (Incumbent)
Beto O’Rourke, who currently serves the 16th District in Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives, went viral earlier this year with a passionate defense of NFL players who have decided to kneel during the national anthem to protest police brutality. He is also a stern supporter of higher quality healthcare for women of color. The congressman’s record in the House is progressive and rarely aligns with the Trump administration’s agenda. He even has endorsements from the likes of LeBron James and Travis Scott.
