Jamie Foxx, Dominique Fishback shine in new Netflix thriller ‘Project Power’

The high-octane thrill ride that also stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt seems to draw inspiration some from familiar stories

Netflix just unveiled it’s latest action flick, Project Power, and in it, Jamie Foxx shines as the unexpected hero we didn’t know we needed.

The high-octane thrill ride that also stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Dominique Fishback seems to draw inspiration some from familiar stories, weaving in elements that will remind viewers of the 2011 film Limitless, mashed up with the special effects that rival some of your favorite Marvel movies.

Still, the film that’s centered in a still-ravaged New Orleans is an entertaining ride strengthened by impressive performances from its leads.

Here’s the description:

“On the streets of New Orleans, word begins to spread about a mysterious new pill that unlocks superpowers unique to each user. The catch: You don’t know what will happen until you take it. While some develop bulletproof skin, invisibility, and super strength, others exhibit a deadlier reaction. But when the pill escalates crime within the city to dangerous levels, a local cop (Gordon-Levitt) teams with a teenage dealer (Fishback) and a former soldier fueled by a secret vendetta (Foxx) to fight power with power and risk taking the pill in order to track down and stop the group responsible for creating it.”

Directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, Project Power delights in catching viewers off guard and building anticipation for the bloody battles that will certainly stay on your mind long after the final credits roll. While the characters are developed enough to be intriguing, and the talented actors who portray them add a layer of depth, there’s still a nagging feeling that something about the story is lacking in a way that keeps it from being remarkable. Overall, it’s a worthy weekend watch even if the premise is a bit redundant.

Fishback reminds us all that she’s certainly a star on the rise and can hold her own alongside her more seasoned costars.

Watching Foxx kicking ass and taking names never gets old, and we need all the Black heroes we can get at a time when our reality seems even more far-fetched than a pill that gives people five minutes of superpowers.
