HBO is finally ready to unveil its mind-bending new series Lovecraft Country and we can’t wait to see what the world thinks of the latest project from Misha Green

While Green serves as showrunner, an executive producer, and writer on the series, co-executive producer Jordan Peele certainly leaves his mark on the show that is also executive produced by J.J. Abrams.

Peele’s knack for making the often-predictable horror genre seem fresh and new is on full display. Green manages to pull off a series that is equal parts ridiculous and gut-wrenching, full of heart, incredible performances, and inspires stark realizations about the horrors of being Black in America.

Each episode is helmed by a different director and each week we find the leads battling new terrors that are inspired from prolific horror tropes, but nothing is as terrifying as the real-life racism they regularly encounter as they move through the South.

On Sunday’s premiere, viewers will meet veteran and Pulp Fiction aficionado Atticus Freeman (superbly played by Jonathan Majors) as he travels from the Jim Crow south to his south side Chicago hometown in search of his missing father, Montrose (Michael Kenneth Williams). Their search-and-rescue turns into a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and monstrous creatures that could be ripped from an H.P. Lovecraft paperback.

After recruiting his uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) and childhood friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett) to join him, the trio sets out for “Ardham,” MA, where they think Montrose may have gone looking for insight into Atticus’ late mother’s ancestry. As they journey across the Midwest, Tic, Leti, and George encounter dangers lurking at every turn, especially after sundown.

The series will absolutely put Majors on everyone’s radar and Smollett has never been better. The striking scenery, shocking twists, and impeccable performances make this series a must-watch.

Lovecraft Country premieres August 16 at 9/8c on HBO.
