Stevie Wonder recovering after kidney transplant: ‘I feel great’
During his virtual press conference Tuesday, Wonder revealed he had undergone surgery in December.
During a virtual press conference Tuesday announcing his move from Motown, legendary musician Stevie Wonder revealed that he had undergone a kidney transplant in December of last year.
“I was blessed with a new kidney,” he said. “I feel great. My voice feels great.”
“I told my daughter Aisha, ‘I’m going to be like five years younger than you now. I’m going from being 70 to being 40,’” he said. “I feel like I’m about 40 right now. I’m feeling great.”
The iconic artist first addressed his health issues in July 2019 at a concert in London.

“So, what’s going to happen is this: I’m going to have surgery. I’m going to have a kidney transplant in September of this year,” he told the crowd. “I’m all good, I’m all good, I’m all good. I have a donor, it’s all good.”
The surgery actually happened on Dec. 6, a few months later.

Wonder’s virtual gathering to give word of his departure from the Motown artist roster after 60 years to launch his own So What The Fuss Records, under the Republic Records/Universal Music Group umbrella, also included the release of two new songs. “Can’t Put It In The Hands of Fate” features rhymers Rapsody, Cordae, Chika and Busta Rhymes, and “Where Is Our Love Song” features guitarist Gary Clark Jr.
He may have officially left the historic label, Wonder says, but he’s not going anywhere.
“Even though I have left Motown, I never leave Motown,” he said Tuesday. “That’s Detroit. So I’m sure that we can figure out how we can do some things at Motown.”
