Dave Chappelle to host post-election episode of ‘SNL’

The legendary comedian was the first to host 'Saturday Night Live' after Donald Trump's election four years ago.

In 2016, legendary comedian Dave Chappelle was the first to host Saturday Night Live after Donald Trump was elected president of the United States of America.

The week following our trips to the polls, Chappelle took to the stage with a monologue meant to heal the growing divide in the nation after a contentious election season.

“America has done it,” he joked. “We’ve actually elected an internet troll as our president.”

That episode of SNL was highly-rated, and NBC’s late-night mainstay is hoping to capture lightning in a bottle a second time, tapping Chappelle to host four years later, after the 2020 election, this Saturday, Nov. 7.

Chappelle was criticized for his closing remarks four years ago, when he said he wished Donald Trump “luck.”

“And I’m going to give him a chance,” Chappelle offered. “And we, the historically disenfranchised, demand that he give us one, too.”

In May 2017, Chappelle later apologized for wishing Trump luck.

“Well, I don’t ever apologize,” he said on a segment of The Van Jones Show on CNN. “I said, ‘I shouldn’t have said that sh*t.'”

“I think the rhetoric of his presidency is repugnant,” said Chappelle. “I just don’t like the way he talks.”

The November 7 episode will come just four days after the 2020 presidential election vying Trump against former Vice President Joe Biden. Experts note that it is possible that the election may not even definitively be decided, due to a large number of mail-in votes amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The musical guest for the show has not been announced.

SNL has been delivering quality content during the Trump presidency. Alec Baldwin won an Emmy Award in 2017 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of Trump on the long-standing sketch comedy show.

This summer, Chappelle hosted a socially-distanced summer camp, for which some of his favorite hip-hop artists and up-and-coming comedians trekked out to his compound in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

He also released a short comedy special to his Netflix channel called “8:46,” which spoke directly to the police killing of George Floyd on May 25 in Minneapolis.
