“We’ve been all over Disney begging. They’ve decided that they’re going to go in a different direction with Sister Act. It won’t be Sister Act 3,” Goldberg said at the time. “It will be a brand new rendition of Sister Act, and I guess I’ll walk through a scene and that’s how they’ll say I was a part of it.”

Sister Act debuted in 1992 introducing the world to Delores Wilson, aka Sister Mary Clarence, a lounge singer who is forced to go into hiding at a convent after witnessing her boyfriend doing some serious dirt. There, she finds her true calling as a choir leader for a group of nuns who need her expertise.

The film grossed a whopping $231M worldwide spawning a 2006 musical and a sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit in 1993. The sequel featured a whole new crop of talent, including a very young Lauryn Hill (pre-Miseducation).

Sister Act 2 was directed by Bill Duke and remains a cult classic.

We don’t know yet about casting but with Tyler Perry involved, we may see some familiar faces as well as some new blood when the movie hits Disney +.

Perry did tell Andy Cohen on a 2018 episode of What What Happens Live with Goldberg, that he’d love to see Goldberg and Tiffany Haddish, who co-starred in Perry’s Nobody’s Fool, work together in the latest incarnation of the Sister Act franchise.

“The two of them in Sister Act, that should happen. Let’s make it happen,” he said.
