Dorothy Capers to join Xylem as General Counsel
She will join the company's senior leadership team next month
Xylem, a global water technology company, has tapped Dorothy Capers for the position of general counsel.
Capers previously served as global general counsel of the transportation provider National Express Group. She is replacing Claudia Toussaint at Xylem, who is moving on as the chief human resources and sustainability officer, according to Business Wire.
“Dorothy brings diverse experience managing legal, compliance and governance issues across industries and within private and public sector settings,” said Patrick Decker, President and Chief Executive Officer.
“She is a veteran leader of global legal teams, with deep experience in mergers and acquisitions and a strong track record of developing and supporting successful public-private partnerships. We are also enthusiastic about adding her passionate voice as a champion of diversity, equity and inclusion across our business. We’re thrilled to welcome her to our leadership team,” Decker continued.
Capers will join Xylem’s senior leadership team effective Feb. 7, reporting to Decker at the Rye Brook, New York-based company.
“Claudia’s role as Chief Human Resources and Sustainability Officer builds on her outstanding work to align our business and sustainability strategies and marks an important step to integrate our human capital and ESG initiatives,” continued Decker.

In a post on Twitter, the company wrote, “Dorothy Capers joins Xylem as our new SVP and General Counsel, bringing experience in managing global legal, compliance and governance issues across industries, and a passion for championing diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace.”
Per the company’s website, Xylem Inc., which has more than 16,000 employees in 150 countries, is committed to “solving water” by creating innovative and smart technology solutions to meet the world’s water, wastewater and energy needs.
The site states: “Our technological strength across the life cycle of water is second-to-none. From collection and distribution to reuse and return to nature, our highly efficient water technologies, industrial pumps and application solutions not only use less energy and reduce life-cycle costs, but also promote sustainability.”
For the last four years, Capers served as Executive Vice President, Global General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of the National Express Group. Prior to that, she held leadership positions with the City of Chicago Department of Law, and the Cook County State’s Attorney Office. She served as Associate General Counsel at US Foods, Inc, per the report.
Capers holds a Juris Doctor from Howard University School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication and History from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
