Tyler Perry’s next project is filled with some major star power. The multi-hyphenate’s upcoming film, “Six, Triple, Eight” was recently announced by Netflix, and is set to star Kerry Washington and Oprah Winfrey among other stars.
Executive produced by Washington, the project is Perry’s fourth film made with Netflix, following “A Fall From Grace,” “A Madea Homecoming,” and his latest, “A Jazzman’s Blues.” This project, which sees Perry serving as writer and director, is based on an article published in WWII History magazine written by Kevin M. Hymel, following the only all-Black, all-female battalion in World War II.
“These 855 women joined the war effort with little knowledge of what exactly they would be doing, but were quickly given the mission of a lifetime: sort through and fix the three-year backlog of undelivered mail,” the official description obtained by theGrio reads. “A herculean task, that most thought to be impossible, the women not only succeeded but did it in half the time they were given. Facing discrimination, unfamiliar land, and a war-torn country, they persevered and sorted over 17 million pieces of mail, reconnecting American soldiers with their families and loved ones back home.”
“The motto that kept them going each day was one they created themselves: ‘No Mail, Low Morale,'” the synopsis concludes. “The women of the 6888 weren’t just delivering mail, they were delivering hope.”
Joining Winfrey and Washington are Hollywood heavyweights like Sam Waterston (“Law & Order”), Susan Sarandon (“Thelma & Louise”) and Dean Norris (“Breaking Bad”).
Ebony Obsidian (“If Beale Street Could Talk”), Milauna Jackson (“A Jazzman’s Blues”), Kylie Jefferson (“Tiny Pretty Things”), Shanice Shantay (“The Wiz Live!,” “Perfect Harmony”), Sarah Jeffery (“Charmed,” “Descendants”), Pepi Sonuga (“Pam & Tommy”) Jay Reeves (“The Tax Collector”), Jeanté Godlock (“Daybreak”), Moriah Brown (“Power Book II: Ghost”), Baadja-Lyne Odums (“Ruthless”) and Gregg Sulkin (“The Throwback”) also star.
The 6888th Postal Directory Battalion has long been shut out of history books, and was only recently acknowledged and honored by the U.S. government. In March 2022, President Joe Biden signed the bill for the women to receive Congress’ highest honor, Congressional Gold Medal.
Late last year, Tyler Perry teased his latest project when attending TheGrio Awards, where he received the Icon Award. He told us, “I am working on a movie right now. I went and visited a few women who have an incredible story. They’re all over 100 years old. And the stories they told me were just fascinating. I can’t wait to tell the story. So that’s what’s going on there.”
