On the latest episode of “The Hill with April Ryan,” host and theGrio’s White House correspondent and Washington Bureau chief April D. Ryan breaks down the latest in the growing list of Republican presidential contenders, including former Vice President Mike Pence and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.
The pair are some of the most recent Oval Office seekers to put a bullseye on Donald Trump, the top Republican candidate for the White House.
This week, activist and theologian Dr. Cornel West also announced a run for president as a third-party candidate on the People’s Party ticket. West could rival the Black and youth vote against incumbent Democratic candidate President Joe Biden.
There are also a number of Black women on the campaign trail are running for higher office this election cycle.
Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks is running for U.S. Senate in Maryland, and up the road on Interstate 95 in Delaware, U.S. Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester is said to have a great chance at her run for U.S. Senate.
In California, longtime U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee is running for the Senate seat being left vacant by retiring Senator Dianne Feinstein. And, in Texas, U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee said she is answering the call to “come home” as she is running for mayor of Houston. Jackson Lee proudly touts the city, which happens to be the native home of musical superstars Megan Thee Stallion and Beyonce.
And lastly, the civil rights division of the U.S. Department of Justice has been on a Deep South listening tour to respond to various concerns. Stops included Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Jackson, Mississippi, and most recently, Indianola, where an 11-year-old Black boy was shot in the chest by a police officer.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump commended Kristen Clarke, assistant attorney general for the DOJ civil rights office, for her boots-on-the-ground efforts. Crump said it is needed as the Deep South has many issues, including a host of district attorneys in support of the policies and ideologies of former President Donald Trump.
These prosecutors, Crump noted, “don’t guarantee constitutional protections are extended to marginalized citizens of color.”
