Fans say that from the opening moments, it pulls you into a story that feels ripped from headlines—and cracked wide open with questions that don’t have easy answers.
At the center are two women: Marley and Fela. Played by Kat Graham and Meagan Tandy, they’re best friends pulled into the kind of nightmare that reshapes lives. Rodney, Fela’s husband and Marley’s brother, is gunned down by police. That moment sets off a chain reaction that’s as much about finding justice as it is about finding out what’s really going on.
“I play Marley Wells, who is an attorney, who is seeking justice for the murder of her very close friend, her brother, Rodney, who is married to my best friend, Fela.” Graham said in an Entertainment Studios exclusive interview. “And all the twists and turns that happen as I’m going down this rabbit hole, trying to find out what actually, really happened.”
And that’s where Duplicity dares to pause and sit in the discomfort of grief, betrayal, and the weight of systemic injustice.
Meagan Tandy’s character, Fela Blackburn, is a former beauty queen turned TV anchor—someone used to controlling a narrative, not becoming it. “Her entire life just gets completely shaken up,” Tandy said. “She has to lean on her best friend, Marley, to go after the city to seek justice. But as everyone ends up finding out, you know, not everything may be as it seems.”
There’s a moment, familiar and jarring, when the trailer cuts in with: “Are you saying there’s a cover-up?” It’s not just a plot device. It’s a gut check. How many times have we heard stories like Rodney’s? How many more will we?
Graham says what makes this film matter is that Perry doesn’t flinch. “It was really brave of Tyler,” Graham said. “To have such a really amazing thriller that has all of these twists and turns, but also root the film in something that has been affecting America.”
That blend of urgency and intimacy is what drew talent like Graham and Tandy, who lit up when talking about working with Tyler Perry. “He’s just a powerhouse, and just a dream person to work with who really expects the best out of you, but also believes in the greatness within you.”
Tandy agreed: “He’s just such a pioneer, you know, just in Hollywood in general. He literally is a writer, director, actor, producer – the man does everything. So being able to be around that energy and just watching him do his thing is really inspiring.”
