Five Superior City Councilors are now calling for the mayor to issue a retraction of his Facebook statement. The full comment was made on a picture of First Lady Michelle Obama and read: “Unbelievable! She and her Muslim partner have destroyed the fabric of democracy that was so very hard fought for!”
“Quite simply, these are really inappropriate comments,” councilor Graham Garfield said Monday evening. “How can we have a non-partisan elected mayor who has to work with elected officials, including the president’s office, making these comments?”
State representative Nick Milroy also joined his voice to the councilors calling for a retraction.
“I’m absolutely shocked and dumbfounded that the mayor would say something so callous and untrue about the First Lady,” Milroy said. “This is not what Superior is about. We’ve always been a community that’s welcoming to all people.”
However, City council president Tom Fennessey said that the Facebook comment was a personal communication, and Hagen himself has stated that he was exercising his free speech and that he made the comment in response to something that a friend said.
