President Obama and the first lady visit 'The View'

theGRIO REPORT - President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama visited 'The View' on Monday for a taping that aired on Tuesday during a break from Obama attending a United Nations conference of world leaders...

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

“Critics have hit this state of affairs hard, saying that Obama is slighting foreign policy in favor of fluffy shows that aid his reelection effort,” reports The Christian Science Monitor about this approach. “In particular they’ve complained about the fact that Obama declined a meeting request from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.”

Yet, other political watchers concede that seeming approachable is the most important element in winning a presidential election, and forgive this possible error.

“It is by now a campaign commonplace that presidents and aspiring presidents must pay tribute to the Gods and Goddesses of Likability by dipping their toes in the popular culture—even if it means skipping substantive bilateral meetings with world leaders during a period of shooting wars and global turmoil,” The Daily Beast’s Grove retorts to those who sit in judgement.

Plus, getting re-elected must be the president’s first priority now — even if it means making foreign policy sacrifices — as having great relationships abroad don’t mean much “if you lose,” the Monitor opined.

Thus, the president used his View appearance to appeal to the all-important segment of women voters a mere six weeks before the election, making sure to remind viewers of the extremely popular show what his campaign is all about.

“Well, you know I think America is so strong, and we’ve got so much going for us that we can survive a lot,” Obama related, according to The Washington Post. “But the American people don’t want to just survive, we want everyone to thrive.

“We want folks to have a shot at success,” the president added, “and so the question then just becomes, whose policies are more likely to lead us to where we want to go?”

That’s a question the Romneys can answer when they make their scheduled appearance on The View in October.
