Thursday, a Republican state lawmaker in West Virginia said that while rape is horrible, it’s “beautiful” that a child could be produced as a result of the attack.

Charleston Gazette reporter David Gutman says he was on the scene when delegate Brian Kurcaba (R) said, “Obviously rape is awful,” but “what is beautiful is the child that could come from this.”

The comments were made during a House of Delegates discussion of a law outlawing all abortions in the state after 20 weeks’ gestation. Pro-life activists and lawmakers allege that because a fetus can feel pain at 20 weeks, it is too viable to abort.

While the bill was passed by West Virginia Republicans in 2014, the state GOP has revived it and voted to remove any previous exceptions made for victims of rape and incest.

Kurcaba — a financial adviser who was elected in 2014 — isn’t the first of his party to make brow-raising comments in regards to rape and women’s access to reproductive health care.

Previously, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) implied that women routinely concoct false rape stories in order to get abortions. “If it’s an honest rape,” said Paul, physicians should allow the victim to abort. However, women who can’t prove they’ve been raped should not be able to terminate their pregnancies.

Despite his strong stance, Paul shared no specific plans as to how a practitioner is supposed to differentiate an “honest rape” from a dishonest one.
