Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

A Black Santa App lets kids talk to a Santa Claus that looks like them.

Amber Ravenel, who founded the app, came up with the idea when her niece could not believe that Santa could look like her.

“When I grew up there was only one type of Santa, and no matter where I went they always looked the same,” Ravenel told The Huffington Post.

“Not one looked like me or anyone in my family. As our society becomes more and more diverse, I think it’s crucial that there is diversity and inclusion in all aspects of life, the tech tools we use and that should include Santa Claus as well.”

A message from Santa

The app allows children to see a prerecorded message from Black Santa for the holiday season. In the message, Santa tells kids to be good and get into the Christmas spirit.

It’s perfect not only for kids who want to see a Santa that looks like them, but for kids who can’t see Santa in person–or simply for kids who need that little extra spark of magic this holiday season.

Whatever the case, the app is already projected to make a splash in the holiday marketplace.

In the future, Ravenel hopes to include more diversity in the selection. Soon, Santa will include other ethnicities and genders as well.

You can check out the app on iTunes for just $2.99.
