The 23rd Annual Critics’ Choice Awards was held in Los Angeles on Thursday evening and while there weren’t a ton of people of color in the winner’s circle, there were plenty of beautiful black folks at the big event.

Common was on deck and happy to gush about his latest project, The Chi, for which he serves as an executive producer and has a yet to be seen recurrent role.

“The Chi is one of the most rewarding things I have ever been a part of,” he told TheGrio. To have people from my city and people across the country really be into the Chi and see the humanity of what Lena [Waithe] wrote and be connected to the characters and look at black life in a new way and a different way. It’s a beautiful thing.”
