Black media thankfully shut out of Trump Fake News Awards
On Wednesday, Donald Trump rolled out his long-promised 2017 Fake News Awards.
The embattled president announced the Trump Fake News Awards by tweeting a link listing the so-called winners. Unfortunately for the social-media savvy POTUS the awards stumbled right out of the starting gate when the link took visitors to a site that was down for maintenance.
Eventually, the list went up on GOP.com. In the rollout, the release noted that “studies have shown that over 90 percent of the media’s coverage of President Trump is negative.”
The year of 2017 also got the distinction of being named “a year of unrelenting bias, unfair news coverage and even downright fake news.”
As for the list itself, the “winners” include the New York Times, which tops the list, and CNN, which is mentioned four times. Newsweek also made the list and even tweeted about their “win” after it went out.
There’s a distinct lack of color on this list
Notable, however, is the lack of any awards for Black media. It’s a pretty white list, despite the fact that the Black media has done plenty to hold Trump’s feet to the fire and call him out on his racism.
What about April Ryan, for example? She has repeatedly pressed this administration on their lies and outright asked Trump if he was a racist after the debacle that was his “shithole countries” comments on immigration?
And what about Don Lemon? The New York Times reported that Trump “hate-watches” the CNN personality, so you’d think he would make Trump’s hit list, right?
But it looks like the president doesn’t have anything to say about these reporters attempting to hold him accountable, probably because they’re right to do so.
“Some, I assume, are good people”
In a typical Trumpian move, the president added after tweeting out the results that he didn’t hate all reporters… just some.
“Despite some very corrupt and dishonest media coverage, there are many great reporters I respect and lots of GOOD NEWS for the American people to be proud of!” he wrote.
He didn’t name names in the Trump Fake News Awards, though. And you can bet if the president did, there probably wouldn’t be any Black reporters on the list.
