Legal battle between Frank Ocean and his father ends

The lengthy legal battle between Frank Ocean and his father, Calvin Cooksey, has finally ended.

According to Rolling Stone, Cooksey sued Ocean for 14.5 million dollars in 2017 for libel because of a Tumblr post where Ocean spoke out about the Pulse Orlando Club mass shooting and reflected on growing up with his father.

Cooksey claimed that because of Ocean’s post, he was unable to sell his movie script, was labeled a “bigot”, and that his reputation was ruined. He also claimed that Oceans’ childhood recollections from the post were false.

“I was six years old when I heard my dad call our transgender waitress a faggot as he dragged me out of a neighborhood diner saying we wouldn’t be served because she was dirty. That was the last afternoon I saw my father and the first time I heard that word, I think, although it wouldn’t shock me if it wasn’t,” Ocean wrote in the post.

According to The Jasmine Brand, the appeal court dismissed Cooksey’s case due to his inability to produce his documents in a timely manner.

Other Cases

This isn’t the first instance that Ocean has been involved in a legal matter. Last month, Ocean sought a legal injunction against his producer, Om’Mas Keith, who claimed that he co-wrote 11 songs on Ocean’s 2016 album, Blonde. Frank Ocean claimed that he paid Keith a flat fee in 2014 to produce the songs. Ocean and Keith also previously worked together during the creation of Channel Orange.
